Lewes, Delaware is a neat town.  Actually, its claim to fame is that it is the First Town in the First State.  This month they are showcasing a Tulip Festival, which I've heard may or may not be a well-known celebration amongst the locals, but exists for every one's viewing pleasure nonetheless.  Our family stopped by this Easter weekend which seemed to be the perfect time to see the flowers in bloom.

If you've never been to Lewes I have two things to recommend:  King's Ice Cream on Second Street (sort of the main drag of town), and the calm, calm beach along Delaware Bay.  For those who can't swim well, or families with small children and babies, the waves at this beach are Super Still.  It's not the kind for riding waves in on your boogie board, but rather a chill, still, family-oriented beach.

True story:  Josh and I were swimming at Lewes a few years back and I don't like not touching the bottom.  So I bob around (while always being able to touch ground) and my foot touched something.  I had Josh investigate, thinking it could be a big neat rock (I was probably freaking out, though, saying 'You don't have to get it!' -- you never know, it could be a crab or something?!).  Anyway, it turned out to be a whelk (a big ol' sea snail!!) -- and a live one, at that!  The shell was neat, no doubt -- bigger than his hand, blue and white-ish, but the whelk was writhing around half out of his shell looking like a thing unleashed and unhappy at being unearthed -- again, I was probably freaking out.  He threw it back into the bay.  Yuck, but neat.

Second post of this day to follow.  If you're ever in Delaware, be sure to stop by Lewes, anytime of the year!  =)
