On giving up writing / Stinson Beach, California, September 2005

--------------------------------------------

Based on my records, I stopped writing regularly in late 2005.  I can only attribute this to a couple things.  Firstly, I got engaged around then, and secondly, I think I made a conscious decision to put the pen down.  I don't believe it was out of laziness, or a lack of time, or because of my job, etc.  I seriously think I had a realization that I wrote when things were kind of down or messy, and that writing of them only made me think about them more, circularly, and memorialize my fucked up thoughts of those times.

Writing makes me pensive, thoughtful -- which sounds like a good thing.  But for me, I think it would keep me in a place rather than help me move along.  I wanted to get on with things.  And I think not writing about myself was a way to move forward in my own life.

I return now, or of late, I suppose as a way to document what is going on with me, hopefully as a changed person since about decade or more ago.  To reflect a bit.  Some of what I've been sharing with you has been old writing, and I mean OLD writing, from at least 18 years ago.  I'm starting to think about 15 years is a good buffer of time between myself and old me.  I can smile and laugh and share with good humor how earnest, if not embarrassing, I was at 16 and 17.  I'm not sure I'm ready to share what 20, 21, and 22-year-old me was up to.  She was darker than I remember, and greedy.  She, too, was beautiful, but forgot about it or refused to believe it.

And she wanted the world.  Not just the world itself, but the world inside everyone she loved.  Possessive and aggressive, I would have bled out any of my lovers if they let me.  If they were Josh, they would stand their ground.  If they weren't, they ran or dropped me cold, and rightfully so.  I was vampiric.  And my writing at this time... was bat-shit crazy.

Don't get me wrong, some of it was good.  Real good.  I may have a hidden career in writing pop music lyrics when I grow up.  Because most of my writing is that dramatic and over-the-top.  I was a total wrecking ball, too, Miley, my friend.

And I will always want you.

These pictures are from a California trip I took with Kara in September 2005.  Our acquaintance, Mat, encouraged us to drive out to Stinson Beach, a scenic town about a half-hour from San Francisco.  The drive was windy and wild, and I learned that many of those auto commercials showing cars romantically swooshing along the curves of a mountainside are filmed here.

Excerpt from journal entry,  October, 2005:

"I had to ride the high out," I told Kara.

... When will I surrender to a quiet life?  I have wanted it so long... do I need to try harder, or just hold on?

Tonight, Five Years Ago

...in a land, far, far away...
We had our wedding rehearsal in Annapolis, at St. Mary's.  Dinner followed at the Charles Carroll House, which is conveniently adjacent to the church.  It was raining and gloomy.  Weather was so poopy some folks were late to the rehearsal.  Nevertheless, all went well.  Times were celebrated.  Food was eaten.  Tear-jerking presents were bestowed (Josh's father has a knack for writing poetry for his family).  After all was done we headed back to the hotels to rest up and prepare for The Big Day.

Megan and I shared a room; Mandy, Sara, and Kara were down the hall.  Megan and I stayed up way too late watching way too much Tila Tequila.  I'll never forget it.  I slept with my hair all did up, rolled-like, so it would be curly the next day.

Good times.

SPXPO!!! Two days in September at the grand Small Press Expo in Bethesda with Kara and my favorite authors!

Kara and the crowd @SPX
Alvin Buenaventura and Dan Clowes discuss their book, Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Dan Clowes
Dan Clowes was awesome, articulate, self-depricating, and snarky.  Hearts!!
plus he was a bowl-cutted cutie in his youth
but not so much now (haircut-wise)

Kara looking hard for something to spend her money on; me, not so discriminating!
Ben Claussen of Dirt Farm fame signing a print
I think we're in front of Pranas' booth here.  I got an awesome screened cloth comic.  Check out his stuff here.

I was hoping my beaver's teeth earrings would be a conversation starter.  No one noticed!
Special thanks to Sophia Weidman who took our picture.  I picked up her Lettuce Girl comic.  She's great; I highly recommend The Deformitory!

The Ides of September:  Kara joined me for her first Small Press Expo, and like, my, I don't know, 6th?  Fun times were had.  Lots of things to look at; many opportunities to support writers/illustrators from far and wide (via the parting of money).  I wasn't as restrained as Kara but we both picked up some great things.  She picked up a dirty turtle print from now-DC/Bmore local Ben Claussen (I believe he's originally from New Orleans).  We both picked up Sara Becan's book, Shuteye.  We sat in on panels of my favorite authors, Los Bros Hernandez and Dan Clowes.  I nerded out one day longer than Kara and stood in lines to have things signed by Dan Clowes and Adrian Tomine.  Dan was pleasant and teasing, saying he wanted to steal my 1st edition Eightball.  Tomine seemed a bit cooler/standoffish, but seemed appreciative that I mentioned his marriage book as a standing order/present for all upcoming weddings.  All-in-all: a great event, as always.  SPX only gets better every year.  Even with the big-draw names and comic-rock-star speakers, I felt like it wasn't too terribly crowded, well, not too terribly overwhelming, rather, since I sort of felt mentally-prepared knowing the authors would be a popular draw.
I can't wait for next year!  Good job and keep the good stuff coming, SPX organizers!!

Ah, Insubordination Fest.  For the past few years Baltimore has hosted this poppiest of punk fests at Sonar, but thankfully the location moved to the Ottobar this year, a more suitable venue for the attendance (it didn't feel as much a spread-out sea of lollygaggers; more of a nice family of nerdlinger punkers).

We came exclusively to see our Boston friends, The Fatal Flaw, play a short set (all the sets were amended due to cramming so many bands in for one evening).  I may or may not have taken a nap before said show and was probably a lil' foggy/groggy driving us down to Bmore just to get there a few minutes late (boo!), during the FF's set.  Yummy pizza was devoured at a crowded Joe Squared later that night and delicious crepes were tasted the following morning in Aberdeen before parting ways.

Get some!
