DEEP SLEEP

Charm City Art Space

Josh and I went to see Deep Sleep play the Charm City Art Space on Sunday.  Now, it's been a WHILE since I've been to a show, and this one started at 9pm.  LATE for lil' Annie!  But not to fear -- naps were taken that afternoon, so I was actually in good shape to trek down to Bmore and get our punk rock on.

Right around the corner from the show space is a good pizza and risotto joint called Joe Squared (that I discovered for dinner one night I attended an 'out-of-the-box' professional development workshop for librarians where we took a class in a performing/trapeze artist studio, In-Flight Theater, right across the street.  We ate at Joe Squared for dinner that night after swinging around on bars, hoops, ropes, and whatnot; whatta night! and ooohh, my tummy!).  Anyway, the place was packed!!  It was a rainy evening and I guess folks wanted their hot pizza, steaming risotto, beer and wine.  I sure did!

We lucked out and snagged two sweet seats at the bar where our servers were attentive and quick.  We happened upon a live music night, so during dinner we listened to the musical stylings of Jumpcuts, a local electro-pop band that included a violinist and tromboner.  I actually stayed and watched them after our meal while Josh ran back to CCAS to catch the show.  (I like Jumpcuts' song Singular.  For some reason myspace is only playing if I use Firefox.  Huh.  Their other stuff is ok.  I have to admit most of what they played while we were eating was better than what I hung around for, but hey, it was free entertainment.)

After I split I got to the CCAS show at the end of The Infected's set (who I think sounded poppy/punk and had a ton of tshirt merch!).  Scum Again played next and then Deep Sleep, a band fronted by our friend Tony Pence, who owns Hamden's Celebrated Summer Records.  Both bands were fun to watch, and I'm glad we had a chance to see Deep Sleep, since their members are now splintered around the U.S.  I knew we were in for a good time when their drummer took off his shirt before they started and had a collarbone tattoo that said FUN FUN FUN across the top of his chest.  I knew we were in for a super great time when he took off his pants and played in his underwear.  Awesome.  and Fun Fun Fun!

A night of good, fast, punk sound and energy; it felt good to be an old punk at the front of the crowd.
Peep Deep Sleep's releases on Grave Mistake Record's webstore HERE.  Enjoy!
