Yes, that's our Christmas tree we are using as mulch, and yes, for some reason we are cutting all the branches by hand.  I got the idea from Apartment Therapy, which also referenced a This Old House article.  

I cut up the branches a couple of months ago, expecting the needles to go brown and then I could just shake them or brush them off the branches, leaving them for mulch.  But nooo, for some reason the limbs are hardy and still green as all get-out.  It is now the end of March and for the most part the cut branches still look great, smell great, and are providing great cover for my front garden.  I'd still like them to be cut up, so that is a slowly-but-surely project for right now.
